Animated House of the Dragon Prequel "Nine Voyages" Remains in Development
The animated prequel series Nine Voyages, part of the expanding House of the Dragon universe, is still "ongoing," according to actor Steve Toussaint, who portrays the Sea Snake. Toussaint recently revealed that he spoke with George R.R. Martin about the project as recently as last month.
From Live-Action to Animation
In an interview with ScreenRant ahead of House of the Dragon's third season, Toussaint explained the shift in the project’s format. Originally planned as a live-action spin-off, Nine Voyages transitioned into an animated prequel following the release of House of the Dragon's first season. Toussaint shared that he might still lend his voice to a 21-year-old version of Lord Corlys Velaryon.
"When we were shooting season 1, it was mooted, and I was like, 'Oh my God, that'd be great.' And then I thought, 'I can't play 21 again. Oh shit, it's too late,'" Toussaint recalled. "And then George [R.R. Martin] said to me, 'Oh no, it'll be animated.' And I was like, 'Okay, great.' But that's the last I heard. I saw George just a few weeks ago, and as far as I'm aware, it's ongoing. I don't know what stage they're at with it, but it's still a possibility. But other than that, I don't know."
Expanding the World of Westeros
Nine Voyages is one of several upcoming Game of Thrones-related projects in development, aimed at further expanding the World of Westeros on screen. Other notable projects include:
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, which is already in production.
- An Aegon's Conquest movie, being written by Andor scribe Beau Willimon.
- A potential Jon Snow sequel series, which may still move forward despite earlier reports of its cancellation.
House of the Dragon Season 3 and the Battle of the Gullet
The much-anticipated House of the Dragon season 3 premieres in just over a week and will open with the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet. Showrunner Ryan Condal has described the episode as the "craziest episode of television ever made." In this pivotal battle, Lord Corlys Velaryon will play a key role as Triarchy Admiral Sharako Lohar seeks vengeance on the Sea Snake.
Originally planned for season 2, the Battle of the Gullet was delayed to season 3 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, which disrupted production schedules. However, Condal assured fans that this has not impacted plans for seasons 3 or 4. In fact, the production team is ahead of schedule and has already begun presenting season 4 scripts to HBO.
Release Timelines
Nine Voyages does not currently have a release date. Meanwhile, House of the Dragon season 3 will premiere on HBO in the US on June 21, and on HBO Max, Now, and Sky in the UK on June 22.
