Dragon's Dogma 2: Major Updates and the Upcoming Dark Arisen Expansion
Dragon's Dogma 2 is set to receive its own Dark Arisen expansion this October, marking an effort by Capcom to rejuvenate the title years after its initially polarizing launch.
Parallels with Monster Hunter Wilds
This announcement follows the Summer Game Fest reveal of the Ascendance expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds, another action RPG that faced significant performance issues—especially on PC—during its extended recovery period. Capcom appears intent on addressing problems with both titles, aiming to bolster its otherwise strong lineup.
Dragon's Dogma 2: Balance Changes and Quality-of-Life Upgrades
Today, Capcom unveiled a comprehensive list of balance adjustments and quality-of-life enhancements for Dragon's Dogma 2. Some of these changes are live now, while others will arrive in an August patch. Here are the highlights:
Key Changes Introduced Today
- Eternal Ferrystone: An infinite-use fast travel item has been added, along with more Portcrystals scattered across the world.
- Improved dungeon loot stats.
- Reduced fees and prices for multiple items and services.
- Increased gold rewards for certain quests.
- Reduced stamina consumption while dashing outside of combat.
- A specific tweak: "Selecting Load from Autosave after defeat will no longer result in loss gauge accumulation."
Upcoming Changes in August
The August update promises even more significant changes:
- Save System Overhaul: Players will get three save slots, each displaying autosave, "interim save," or "last inn rest" data with detailed timestamps. Loading an inn save will no longer overwrite autosave or interim save data.
- Dragonsplague Adjustment: The controversial Dragonsplague world hazard will be further toned down. A new item, the Dragonsbaulk Draught, will allow players to entirely bypass its effects.
Additional Enhancements
Beyond travel and economy changes, Capcom is implementing a range of gameplay improvements:
- Reduced in-combat flinch.
- Increased weapon skill slots from four to six.
- Stealth improvements: Crawling will now make characters stealthier.
- Wakestones: These will gain invincibility windows and enhanced stamina recovery.
- Extensive retouching across virtually all vocations.
Capcom's Vision for the Future
In a Twitter post, Capcom confirmed plans for two major Title Updates ahead of the Dark Arisen expansion. The second update, in particular, promises:
- Substantial performance improvements, addressing one of the most glaring issues with Dragon's Dogma 2.
Performance has been a long-standing concern for the game, especially on PC, where it was plagued with severe optimization issues. Even on consoles, the game struggled to deliver consistent frame rates. With the Dark Arisen expansion on the horizon, the prospect of a more stable and smoother experience is generating cautious optimism among fans.
Learning from Pragmata's Success
Capcom's ongoing efforts reflect lessons learned from the success of Pragmata. The company emphasized that "the creation of completely new IPs is an important initiative," and they "intend to continue pursuing" this strategy to strengthen their portfolio.
